Self care tips from Jonathan Van Ness Pittsburgh | Sewickley Spa
Jonathan Van Ness from Queer Eye is a national treasure. His pure heart knows no bounds, especially when it comes to helping others. What sets him apart from other beauty gurus is the fact that he cares so deeply about making those who are lucky enough to be his canvases feel just as good on the inside as they do on the outside.

With it being the dead of winter, it’s easy to start feeling a bit blue and overall tired. That’s why we want to share a few of his self care tips and tricks to make you feel amazing inside and outside.

“Slow down and nurture yourself”

Life is hectic, to say the least. Every day presents a new challenge that we must tackle. We take care of everyone and everything that needs our attention, and we do it well. That’s why when bedtime finally arrives, we’re often too exhausted to do much of anything for ourselves.

That was also the case for Deborah and Mary Jones in Queer Eye season three, episode three. They were so focused on taking care of their community and running their popular Jones Bar-BQ, they weren’t taking care of themselves. Van Ness was quick to right that wrong with a beauty day including a massage. He told them they’ll have extra energy for others if they take some time for themselves.

You deserve the same! Make sure to schedule a self care day for yourself (we recommend enjoying a massage!).

“Showing up for yourself, putting on a little moisturizer, can inspire so many different parts of your life”

Sometimes taking care of yourself can feel like a huge haul, and Van Ness knows this. On bad days, it can even feel a bit impossible to tackle the task. But on those days, the small things can go a long way.

The first step is often the hardest, but it doesn’t need to be. You don’t need a beauty or grooming overhaul every time you want some self care. If you can only manage something small like moisturizer or a simple manicure, that still counts! And once you take that first step, the next step becomes that much easier.

“It’s really meant to be fun”

Yes, grooming and taking care of yourself is another task to add to your probably extensive to-do list. But life is all about perspective. Van Ness told Men’s Health, "[Grooming] is an ongoing relationship, and it’s really meant to be fun.”

How often do you get the chance to just—wait for it—take care of yourself? Get that facial you’ve held off on for months. Bask in the luxury of getting a pedicure. Stop feeling guilty, and just have a good time! The world will be there when you finish, we promise.
