How to Take Care of Your Mental Health While Social Distancing

1. Keep in touch with friends and loved ones

Just because we’re limiting physical contact doesn’t mean we need to totally isolate ourselves from our friends and family. If you’re feeling particularly lonely, schedule video chats with your friends and family. There are tons of platforms out there to help you stay in touch with the ones you love. Google Chrome even has a plugin that lets you watch Netflix together!

A fun way to structure your online social gatherings is coming up with various themes. Try a remote cocktail party, organize a book club, or take turns sharing all the great new music you’ve been discovering. While nothing beats the real thing, virtual hangouts are a great way to keep your spirits up. We’re not alone.

2. Make time for yourself

Whether you’re at home with family or working remotely, it’s important to make time for yourself, too. Try to do something for yourself every day, whether that’s reading a few chapters of a book, watching your favorite TV show, taking a nice bath, or even taking a walk (with CDC recommendations in mind).

This is important for those taking care of other members of the household, such as your kids or elderly relatives. You’re not helping anyone if you’re not feeling great yourself. Conversely, those living alone might feel like they have too much me-time on their hands, but it’s important to devote some of that time to doing something fun, relaxing or stress-free.

3. Stick to your normal routine

If you’re not used to being home all day, you might be feeling a little overwhelmed. You can bring a little order back to the chaos by sticking to a loose daily routine. For instance, try to eat at the same time every day and schedule out what you’re going to work on that day. Try to keep your normal life’s routines going as much as possible. For instance, it can be tempting to stay in your PJs all day, but if your normal routine starts with a shower and getting dressed, stick to it. Furthermore, try to wake up and go to bed as you normally would. All of these simple activities can really help reduce stress and give you control over a very odd time,

None of us are pretending this isn’t a weird situation and falling into a routine can certainly help everything feel a little more normal. However, don’t go crazy with scheduling your day. Don’t try to plan out any more than you normally will. This will likely drive you and everyone else in your home nuts. Take every day as it comes.

4. Keep your body healthy

It’s no secret that your mental health is linked to your physical health. Staying home all day, every day can certainly take its toll on your normal exercise routine and diet. If you’re used to going to the gym, try swapping out your exercises for things you can do at home and keep to your normal regimen. It can also be really tempting to spend all day snacking, but try to keep your eating habits as normal as possible.

Of course, there are plenty of measures you should also be taking to avoid the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses. Remember to use caution when visiting public places such as supermarkets or pharmacies, avoid using public restrooms or touching too many surfaces, disinfect regularly touched items, and practice good personal hygiene at home.

5. Limit your screen time and find alternatives

This is good advice at any point in time, but it’s definitely a high priority for those of us working remotely or stuck inside all day. Blue light from our computer, phone and television screens can really take its toll on your eyes and your mental health. It can leave you feeling tired all day and make it harder to fall asleep.

If you’re looking at screens all day, try using some of your me-time or family time to unplug. Read a book for a while, try a new hobby like drawing or playing the guitar, or simply meditate for a while. Your eyes and brain will thank you!
