Remedies for Dry Winter Skin | Sewickley Spa
Winter is cold, dreary and might have you feeling a little blah. Shake off the wintertime blues and feel great with a few remedies for dry winter skin.

Humidify the Air

Hydration is the main thing you’re skin lacks during the blistering winter months. Humidifiers are super helpful in bringing back that moisture your body craves because they are designed to add moisture to the air.

You might think that lotions are sufficient, but that’s not always the case. The heat from your HVAC system dries out EVERYTHING, affecting your skin, eyes and breathing quality. Invest in a cool air humidifier (warm air units will compound problems) to improve your well-being, including your sinuses. For an added boost, regulate the dryness in the air further by keeping the heat at a lower temperature.

Cut Down on the Hot Showers

There’s nothing that feels better than a steaming shower when you come in from the cold, but it’s not always the best thing for you. Moderation is best.

Hot water increases the evaporation of your skin’s natural moisture, drying your body out. Sure, some personal grooming and hygiene regimens might take up more time (that’s a necessary evil). As a general rule, though, try to keep hot showers to about 10 minutes.

Moisturize All Day Long

While moisturizers are not the only line of defense against winter dryness, they are essential to skin health. In contrast to your warm season routine, wintertime calls for heavier moisturizers due to harsh conditions.

In the morning, shower normally (or rinse off) and pat your skin dry. From here, apply a thick moisturizer. Thick formulas are ideal to lock in ingredients to help dry, cracked skin. Moisturize again at night in stubborn dry spots around the cheeks and eyes for maximum results.

Exfoliate with a Facial

Exfoliation is good for you, because it removes dead skin cells. However, approach it with caution during the winter. Over-exfoliating during cold weather will dry out the skin, so limit facial washing to once a day with mild cleansers (i.e. cleansing oil or micellar water cleanser) for a gentle effect.

Because exfoliation is ideal on an occasional basis, make the most of it. Facials are perfect for wind-blown winter skin. Treatments hone in on reducing redness, improving elasticity, reducing pore size and and moisturizing.
